In 1979, a group of geologists, exploring the vast rugged, red desert terrain of the far north west of Australia, spotted a speck of light, glinting in an anthill.

The land had been sacred to the Aboriginals for thousands of years, a land of great untamed beauty and rich resources that had drawn prospectors in the 19th century.

The glimmer of light was a diamond, and the discovery was to change the course of gemology and jewellery history, and the lives and fortunes of the indigenous peoples of the East Kimberley. After lengthy negotiations, explorations and preparations, Rio Tinto opened the Argyle Diamond Mine in 1985, presenting the world with an unprecedented stream of exquisite pink diamonds of incomparable brilliance, tone and beauty. Through history, discoveries of pink diamonds, in India, Brazil and Africa, had been sporadic, unexpected and unpredictable. Never before had there been a single, sustained source of pink diamonds anywhere in the world. This momentous milestone opened a new chapter in the story of the diamond.

Along with the marvel of a new mine offering up diamonds in all colours of the sunset, came the realisation that these diamonds displayed very particular qualities. The Argyle diamonds were relatively small, but their superlative quality, their life, fire and scintillation was combined with a palette of tender peach, warm bronze, chocolate brown and sweet, lilac-tinged pinks, even violets, reds and blues, of a range, tone, hue and saturation never seen before in a coloured diamond.

Today, deep in the heart of Western Australia’s vast East Kimberley desert, the Argyle Diamond Mine unearths 600 million diamonds each year. Among these are the revered coloured diamonds, and at their heart, the highly coveted, supremely precious pink stones. The Argyle Diamond Mine is now the world’s largest producer of pink diamonds, supplying over 90% of global production.

Even today, while the Argyle Diamond Mine unearths more pink diamonds than any other mine in the world, just one tenth of one per cent of diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine is pink.
